White Lisle
White Lisle

After the Battle of Hastings in 1066, the conquest of William ordered a castle built in England. Colchester was one of the sites chosen and the work began in 1069 at the location of the foundations of a Roman temple from the first of Claudius, around AD44. The castle was designed by Siward Bishop of Rochester and built under the supervision of Eudo Stewart who later became the steward of the castle after its completion.
The castle was built primarily from materials from Roman ruins, but the clay pits of the Roman city has also been used. The castle was built in the same style as the White Tower of the Tower of London, also designed by Siward and is the only building in Britain with the plant itself. In fact, Colchester Castle is half as large again as the White Tower and originally there were four storeys high, but the two floors executives have been lost.
Construction stopped around 1080 because of repeated threats of a Viking invasion. A characteristic to note is the configuration of the slots on the first level, which apparently have been added more quickly during construction, probably due to the Danish threat of attack. Work on the castle is expected to be completed by 1100.
Exceptionally, the castle seems to have had a lot of action military history. In 1215 the castle was besieged and eventually captured by King John following the altercation with rebellious nobles that eventually led to the signing of the Magna Carta. The castle was held for three months by a French garrison that had been helping the barons of his fight with the king.
Colchester Castle has had various uses, and have ceased to be a royal castle. It has been used as a county jail and Matthew Hopkins in 1645, the self-styled Witchfinder General (which was never granted a title by Parliament), interrogated and imprisoned suspected of witchcraft, and as a result of Hopkins \ 's accusations of witchcraft nineteen suspects were hanged and four more died in prison.
During the final stages of the civil war in England in 1648 and after 12 weeks of siege, Sir Charles Lucas and Sir George Lisle held in the castle after the capture of the city and declare it a stronghold of the royalists. The two men were executed on the grounds behind the castle of the same year. An obelisk now marks the location and the local legend that the grass does not grow in the place of their fall. In 1656, the Quaker, James Parnell, was martyred in the castle. He was buried in a grave no name on the castle grounds. A plaque commemorating his life was placed in the castle in the cell where he died.
Sold by the crown in 1629, the castle was bought by local businessman, John Wheeler. His intention was to demolish the castle and sell raw materials to local builders, but the project proved too expensive and after removing the two upper layers of Mr. Wheeler went bankrupt.
In 1727, the castle was bought by the member for Colchester Charles Gray, as a wedding, which was dedicated to the restoration and added that today the Italian-style facade and tower, because he thought he was a Roman structure. Charles Gray also added a studio, a library and a red tile roof are still visible today. The crypt was open to the public in 1860 as a museum.
The restoration took place in 1930 after the Council had acquired the building and field and in 1983 a project to build large scale began to stabilize the old castle keep. Jobs in Colchester Castle was completed in 1992 and houses Today the Museum of Colchester and Essex.
Colchester is a fascinating city with a rich history and the incredible Store in the center the city makes an ideal base to discover how the city has evolved the last 2000 years. Carefully contained in a Victorian park situated for a family is very adventurous day.
