America tends to pride itself on being the first: the first to walk on the moon, first to harness the power of the automobile and the first in flight, among many other achievements.
America also has something else to brag about: its home to the second largest automaker, General Motors. This all-American car manufacturer has a number of makes under its belt, with Chevrolet being one of its most popular, ever-growing examples. Since Chevy debuted in 1911, it’s been one of the most successful car makers world-wide producing hundreds of thousands of cars, trucks, and SUVs annually. It has outshined many of its competitors with the release of the most powerful, work-horse trucks on the road: the Silverado and Colorado.
Chevy now has another chance to outshine its competitors with the new Chicago Chevy Silverado Hybrid. GM, whose trucks rank very high among competitors in terms of safety and fuel efficiency, is presenting America with a new hybrid version in 2010. Chicago Chevy dealers are looking forward to improved-mileage Silverados hitting lots next year. Any new and used truck Chicago dealer will tell you that consumers are interested in the Silverado Hybrid, but would like to see prime fuel efficiency emerge in the model.
The Silverado Hybrid is said to embody the same toughness as the standard trucks but still is not at the level of fuel efficiency Chevy hopes to achieve. A standard feature of these hybrid trucks is a two-mode Hybrid electric and propulsion system, just another facet setting them apart from competitors.
GM is looking to improve those lagging mpg ratings. To do this, they’re testing new lithium-ion batteries that can store more energy and could be the potential fix. These new lithium-ion batteries would also be counteracting the battery drainage the current hybrid vehicles experience when performing any sort of lifting or towing work, which in essence is what these types of vehicles are built to do.
In speaking about the performance of Chevy’s current Silverado Hybrid, it has stats to brag about. This truck can beat out its standard version reaching 40 percent greater fuel economy in the city and a 25 percent overall improved fuel economy. These have tagged the Silverado Hybrid as one of the most fuel-efficient trucks on the market.
GM knows no truck will ever be capable of keeping up with cars in the mpg race, but they know it is possible to achieve a better return on investment than the standard gas-guzzlers. This is GM and Chevy’s current mission: bring drivers the same rough and tough trucks, but with state-of-the-art fuel efficiency and a nearly invisible carbon footprint.
